Information About
Principles and Tools for Effective Parenting
(Pilot class)

Principles and Tools for Effective Parenting is an overview of information, strategies, and tools you can use to make decisions that will work for both you and your child, now and in the future.

Learning new information is often fun, but applying those concepts is where change really happens. In this class you will learn new information AND apply it to situations with your child(ren), partner, or friend.

Many parents would like information on effective parenting but do not have time or energy to spend attending a traditional face-to-face class. At the same time, parents very much appreciate talking with other parents in a face-to-face setting.

This hybrid model blends these two desires by giving much of the information online (which adapts more easily to the parent’s schedule) while providing some face-to-face time. In this class, we will meet face-to-face every other week. You will have preparation to do before you come to class. On the alternate weeks, you will work and discuss concerns online with the other students.

Each week we will focus on a new principle. For each principle, there will be (1) tools to expand your repertoire, (2) readings and/or video to present the content; (3) activities and quizes to practice the content; (4) data collection, lab work and your class project to apply the principle to real life; and (5) fellow students and the instructor to discuss things with.

Individual project. In the first week of class you will choose a parenting issue to focus on during the whole class. Each week you will apply the week’s principle and tools to your chosen issue. Toward the end of the class you will write a Parenting Principles in Action story where you use all the material you have learned. There are classic errors that both parents and professionals make. You will review your story and at least one other student’s story checking for errors and weaknesses.

This class will give the tools to solve the challenges you are currently facing and to solve challenges you will face in the future. The Ten Principles of Parenting we will look at are presented in the box below as a sneak preview.
